Combination Remedies

Jean, Greetings,
You wrote about the Dr Goodpet remedies
in a recent post;
(first actual pet homeo products I've seen so far around here
and I wonder about their value......from Wal-Mart you know).
This response is not generated by the
fact the Dr Good pet line is available through the Wal-Mart
store, but rather because most of their product line consists
of what are known as "combination homeopatic remedies".
Combination remedies are made of a
number of different remedies, in varying potencies (strengths).
Many of these remedies have some symptoms in common, but they
do not tend to address the unique and individual needs of
the case. It's sort of like a shot gun approach - if you blast
enough shot in the general direction, maybe something will
fall down.
As a classical homeopath, I practice
under the philosophy of Hahnemann (Sammy H, once you've known
him for a while). He feels that each individual and each individual's
dis-ease has a remedy picture unique unto itself, and that
the appropriate manner of prescribing takes this into consideration.
Classical homeopaths will use a single remedy, few doses of
that remedy, and wait and assess the reaction of the chosen
remedy.
What that means is that your headache
is not the same as my headache (I very rarely have them anymore,
for what that's worth), and that the diarrhea of one dog is
not the same as the diarrhea of the next dog. Classical homeopaths
treat the individual, not the symptoms.
The combination remedies treat the
symptoms, not the individual. They may make the immediate
symptoms go away, but they do not necessarily correct the
underlying imbalance of the Vital Force that allowed the symptoms
to manifest.
This can create serious problems and
deepening of dis-ease down the trail.
I encourage my caregivers to try and
avoid the use of combination remedies such as these. I do
recognize that in some cases the use of these remedies will
give such results that the consumer becomes interested in
homeopathy, and pursues further study. They are not a panacea,
however.
Where are you located in Ontario ??
There are several veterinary homeopaths, and a good collection
of study groups and human homeopaths in the province. The
traditional healing arts have really blossomed there since
I moved stateside nine years ago.
I hope this has been of some use to
you.
Sincerely,
Susan Beal DVM
