Acupuncture is the ancient art and
practice of inserting hair-thin needles into certain points
on the body to stimulate healing. It was developed by the
Chinese and has been used on animals as far back as the Shang
dynasty.
The theory of acupuncture is based
on the rebalancing of the Yin and Yang principles in the body
and if these are correctly modified, the body's chi (life
force) will also be balanced to maintain good health. According
to Allen M. Schoen, DVM, in his book, "Love, Miracles
and Animal Healing", in recent years Western scientists
have determined that the acupoints actually mark the locations
of important microtubules beneath the skin, which house tiny
nerves and blood vessels. Inserting a needle through the skin
near any of these tubules, stimulates a sensory nerve ending,
causing amazing things to happen that stop pain and/or promote
healing.
